Saint Diarmuid

This is one of the high crosses of Castledermot in County Kildare. (You'll find this one and several other excellent photographs - quite large and with good detail when you click on them - at this site.) Why high crosses? Well, today is the feast day of St Diarmuid who founded the ancient monastery where they are located and after whom Castledermot is named. St Diarmuid founded the monastery in 818 only 5 years before his death in 823. Short though his abbacy was, he brought great prestige to the foundation as it became a burial place for several kings.
